About Us

The Traumatic Brain Injury Model System at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute addresses the spectrum of severity and needs of persons with TBI. The New Jersey TBI Model System resides within a statewide system of trauma care that is one of the most extensive and coherent in the nation. Two Level I Trauma Centers in central and northern New Jersey and two Level II Trauma Centers in southern and western New Jersey participate in the TBI Model System. Through these affiliations the New Jersey Traumatic Brain Injury Model System at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute provides highly specialized services to people who have sustained traumatic brain injuries.

The Center for Head Injuries at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) was established in 1981 and provides a comprehensive continuum of care. It was one of the first rehabilitation centers in the country to recognize that individuals with acquired brain injury require a specialized treatment environment with high quality care provided by a team of medical and rehabilitation specialists. The continuum of care includes inpatient rehabilitation at the acute and subacute levels of care as well as an outpatient, post-acute cognitive rehabilitation program.

The Brain Trauma Unit is a 26-bed acute comprehensive rehabilitation program serving the needs of patients with various levels of disability ranging from patients who are emerging from coma through patients who are receiving rehabilitation services that focus on self-care activities, mobility skills, cognitive recovery, communication, and community re-integration.

The Extended Recovery Unit is a 45-bed subacute rehabilitation program designed to extend inpatient treatment to those patients with acquired brain injuries who have ongoing rehabilitation needs.

The Cognitive Rehabilitation program is an outpatient post-acute rehabilitation program that focuses on maximizing clients' cognitive skills. The Transitional Living program is a residential component of the Cognitive Rehabilitation services offering a structured environment with emphasis on enhancing life skills, personal care, safety, and community re-integration.
