Adult Inpatient Programs and Services
Stroke Rehabilitation

The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute provides comprehensive services for patients who have had a stroke. Depending upon the type of stroke experienced, patients may have paralysis and/or difficulty with vision, speaking or thinking, as well as changes in behavior.

During the first days of a patient's stay, a comprehensive evaluation will take place. Based upon physician recommendations, goals are set and a treatment program is designed. The treatment program may address any of the following areas:

  • Walking or wheelchair mobility
  • Vision/perception
  • Swallowing or feeding
  • Articulation/language
  • Cognition
  • Strengthening/stretching
  • Balance/coordination
  • Transfers in/out of bed
  • Medications
  • Adjustment issues
  • Bathing/dressing
  • Bowel and bladder function
  • Leisure activities
  • Tub/shower/toilet use
  • Skin care
  • Homemaking
  • Grooming
  • Driving

Daily therapy schedules will include individual and group therapies. There are also specialized clinics which are recommended as needed.

Depending on a patient's progress, length of stay should be approximately 14 to 17 days. The team will meet weekly to discuss goals, progress and discharge plans. Family members are encouraged to take an active part in training and discharge planning. Additional therapy is often recommended and there are a variety of services available. Many patients complete their rehabilitation in a day hospital or subacute program.
