Spinal
Cord Rehabilitation

The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute provides comprehensive services for patients who have an injury to the spinal cord. The focus of the program is to address a patient's medical problem and maximize mobility and functional independence.
During the first days of a patient's inpatient stay, a comprehensive evaluation will take place. At this time, goals will be set and a treatment program will be designed. The treatment program may address any of the following areas:
- Wheelchair mobility
- Transfer in/out of bed
- Strengthening/stretching
- Bathing/dressing
- Bowel and bladder function
- Balance/coordination
- Lifestyle adjustment
- Medication education
- Skin care
- Leisure activities
- Homemaking
- Grooming
- Ambulation
- Driving
- Tub/shower/toilet use
A patient's therapy schedule will combine individual and group therapy. There are also specialized clinics which are recommended as needed.
A patient's length of stay as an inpatient will be approximately three to four weeks based on each individual's plan of care. The therapy team will meet weekly to discuss goals, progress and discharge plans. Family members will be requested to take an active part in training and discharge planning. Additional therapy continues in a variety of programs in a number of different settings as appropriate to your needs.
