Post-Breast Surgery Therapy

After a mastectomy and breast reconstruction, women may experience post-surgical problems that limit their mobility and interfere with normal work, play and family lifestyles. A specially designed physical therapy program for post-breast surgery patients safely and effectively helps women strengthen comprised muscles, improve scar tissue mobility and manage swelling (edema).
Our approach to restoring the compromised areas includes:
Evaluation - Each woman is assessed on an individual basis in the areas of muscle strength, function and range of motion. The suture area is also carefully examined.
Treatment - Modalities to alleviate pain and tightness may be necessary before exercise begins. An exercise program is implemented including stretches of the arm, shoulders and torso. Therapists also work with patients on basic mechanics including lifting and standing postures during daily activities.
Fitness Center Exercise Programs and Aquatic Therapy - To continue benefiting from exercise, therapists frequently recommend a fitness program that enhances strength and endurance.
Recommendations for Group Counseling - The reassuring environment of a breast cancer support group may also be suggested to help the patients share experiences and gain more insight in both the emotional and physical stresses that may accompany breast surgery.
