Osteoporosis Therapy
Signs of reduced bone density may appear as women enter menopause. The decline in estrogen production accelerates bone loss and places women at greater risk for osteoporosis.
The therapists of Health Plus at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute have established a program to help patients prevent and recover from the effects of this debilitating bone disease. Once osteoporosis has been identified, an exercise and therapeutic plan may include:
- Teaching proper movement to avoid stressing the spine
- Improving posture
- Increasing muscle strength, endurance and flexibility
- Modifying activities that put the spine at high risk for fracture.
- Establishing an individualized, written home exercise program
- Education about osteoporosis
If a fracture has occurred, the rehabilitation process customarily includes all of the above techniques, as well as the following:
- Improving mobility and function through physical therapy and exercise
- Education about pain management techniques
- Teaching patients how to prevent falls
If you suffer from osteoporosis or are a caregiver to someone who is, our program can help. Treatment can be arranged by obtaining a prescription from your physician for physical or occupational therapy that includes the osteoporosis diagnosis. If you aren't under the care of a physician and would like a referral from us, or if you would like to schedule an appointment, call between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, at (732) 321-7790 or (609) 409-1170.
