Adult Inpatient Programs and Services
Neurologic Rehabilitation

The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute provides comprehensive services for patients who have a neurological diagnosis. Depending on the part of the nervous system affected, patients may experience some of the following symptoms: weakness, fatigue, numbness, poor balance and coordination, difficulty swallowing and bowel and bladder symptoms.

During the first days of a patient's inpatient stay, a comprehensive evaluation will take place. At this time, the treatment team will set goals and design a treatment program, which may address any of the following areas:
  • Walking or wheelchair mobility
  • Balance/coordination
  • Speech
  • Cognition
  • Vision
  • Swallowing or feeding
  • Transfers in/out of bed
  • Strengthening/stretching
  • Bowel and bladder function
  • Bathing/dressing
  • Adjustment issues
  • Medication education
  • Grooming
  • Driving
  • Leisure activities
  • Tub/shower/toilet use
  • Skin care
  • Homemaking

The therapy schedule will include individual and group therapy. There are also specialized clinics, which are recommended as needed.

Depending on individual progress and plan of care, the length of stay in the hospital varies. The team will meet weekly to discuss each patient's goals, progress and discharge plans. Family members are requested to take an active part in training and discharge planning. Additional therapy is often recommended and there are a variety of services available.
