Overview: A Treatment Pioneer
The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) in Edison, NJ is a pioneer in the treatment of people with acquired brain injury. We were one of the first rehabilitation centers in the country to recognize that these individuals require a specialized treatment environment with high-quality care provided by a team of medical and rehabilitation specialists.
In 1981, the Center for Head Injuries at JFK was established to provide a broad spectrum of services to patients in the New Jersey / New York area with acquired brain injuries to address their unique therapeutic needs. Our comprehensive range of care settings and rehabilitation services enable us to maintain an uninterrupted treatment flow as patients' needs change through the recovery process.
The Center for Head Injuries offers an unprecedented, integrated approach to head trauma evaluation and treatment. Our goal today remains the same as when the Center was first established: to restore real-life skills to those with head injuries so that they may return to their families and communities at the maximum level possible.
The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute was originally awarded a 5 year Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), in 2002 to pursue research regarding innovative assessment and rehabilitation approaches for people with traumatic brain injury. The grant was renewed in 2007.
A Continuum of Care
Through a continuum of care that extends from acute comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation to subacute inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient cognitive rehabilitation, the Center for Head Injuries applies an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to treat all levels of acquired brain injury. Each level in the continuum is designed to provide a comprehensive, cost-effective, progressive flow of treatment for each patient’s individual needs.
Patients may enter the continuum of care at whatever level is appropriate for their specific clinical needs, and may move to other treatment levels during the course of their treatment.
Patients who have sustained brain injuries have a broad range of needs. To address them, the Center offers a variety of specialized services at our central New Jersey location, including but not limited to:
