support staff in the Family Medicine Center optimizing time for patient care and learning.
Strong biopsychosocial curriculum including lecture series covering topics such as
Death and Dying, Spirituality, Gender Issues, and Family Violence, as well as a Family
Systems rotation in PGY 2 with one-on-one teaching and patient/family evaluations with our
full time Behavioral Scientist.
Outstanding Faculty. Dr. Winter, Director since 1989, has a Master of Medical
Management from Carnegie Mellon University and is Past President of the Association of
Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD). He is currently a member of the Residency
Review Committee for Family Medicine. Dr. Chae has fellowship training in obstetrics, Dr.
Metz has a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Sports Medicine, and both Drs. Milne
and Picciano have a CAQ in Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Deitz joined the faculty in 2006 with
eight years of private practice experience in Minnesota including the practice of obstetrics.
Faculty work closely with each resident addressing individual resident learning needs
including one-on-one precepting in the Family Medicine Center.
Ample elective time for individual interests as well as ability for resident input in
planning and tailoring many rotations to suit individual needs and learning styles.
Restructured curriculum in 2007, teaching how to practice in a Patient-centered
Medical Home. Electronic Medical Record, e-visits, team huddles, and Group Visits for OB,
pediatric and chronic disease patients in the Family Medicine Center.
Strong Obstetrics and Maternal/Child Health curriculum - obstetrical patients seen in
Family Medicine Center, not a "clinic" environment. Babies kept in the practice enabling
excellent family continuity. OB/Gyn teaching done by both JFK Family Medicine faculty and
OB/Gyn faculty from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. OB/Gyn faculty available full
time on site for deliveries, consultation and procedures in the Family Medicine Center.
Housing Allowance is awarded to every resident to help defray housing costs - $200 each
month [$2400/year] – in addition to salary, plus an excellent benefit package.
Training on site at Family Medicine Center in minor surgery, colposcopy, IUD, and
endometrial biopsy. Video flexible sigmoidoscopy, nasorhinolaryngoscopy, pulmonary function
testing, and tympanometry also available. Newly implemented procedure clinic weekly.
Weekly musculoskeletal clinic at the Family Medicine Center with a concentration on Sports
Medicine.
Excellent balance of inpatient and ambulatory care, didactic and clinical experiences designed
to prepare residents for the diverse practice of Family Medicine in the changing healthcare
marketplace – including a strong emphasis on practice management.
Emphasis on the use of medical informatics in research, teaching, and patient education -
residents all provided subscriptions to MD Consult or Up To Date and a PDA
with 5 Minute Pediatric Consult and ePocrates Essentials including 5 Minute Medical Consult.
Strong research curriculum taught by family physicians emphasizes development of life long
learning skills.
