The Center for Head Injuries
Cognitive Rehabilitation Department

The Cognitive Rehabilitation Department consists of a multidisciplinary post-acute neurorehabilitation program and Transitional Living Program. The outpatient component includes both a Comprehensive Neurorehabilitation Program and an Intensive Cognitive Rehabilitation Program.

The Comprehensive Neurorehabilitation Program provides a full range of therapeutic services to patients with a variety of acquired neurologic disabilities at all stages of recovery following hospitalization.

The Intensive Cognitive Rehabilitation Program provides a holistic, therapeutic milieu for patients who have made good physical recovery, but require a highly integrated program of neurorehabilitation. This program addresses the development of compensations for acquired cognitive deficits, psychosocial adjustment and life satisfaction and return to productive functioning.

The Day Activity Program continues to provide long-term socialization and respite care for patients with chronic physical and cognitive disabilities, along with periodic physiatric, physical and cognitive reassessments according to the patient's needs.

Neuropsychology services reside administratively within the Cognitive Rehabilitation Department with an operational component in the neuropsychology clinic. The neuropsychology clinic provides treatment primarily to patients who have achieved some degree of independent community functioning, such as returning to work or school, but still require specialized rehabilitation services. While the primary services include cognitive remediation, psychotherapy and vocational counseling, we have paid greater attention to providing more "traditional" rehabilitation services of speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy to patients through the neuropsychology clinic.

Programs offered through the Cognitive Rehabilitation Department includes:
  • Comprehensive neurorehabilitation - This services includes assistance in speech and language therapy; occupational therapy; physical therapy; neuropsychology; cognitive educational therapy; pre-vocational cognitive therapy; therapeutic recreation; rehabilitation counseling; and case management.
  • Intensive cognitive rehabilitation program - The primary philosophy and objective of this program is the establishment of an appropriate life objective or social role within the family and community and a level of meaningful, productive activity. The second objective of the program is to achieve a level of awareness of limitations, strengths and needs so that the person is destination ready, having acquired the self knowledge and awareness of functional compensations for deficits that will enable them to function successfully within an appropriate community setting.
  • Neuropsychology clinic
  • Post-Concussive Disorders/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - Mild traumatic brain injuries represent about 80 percent of all traumatic brain injury. Although conventionally these patients have been believed to make a complete recovery within several months of injury, there is increasing evidence of persistent dysfunction among these patients, with estimates of from 20 to 50 percent of patients exhibiting symptoms from one to 15 years post-injury. The Cognitive Rehabilitation Department has an established reputation for clinical expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with mild traumatic brain injury and post-concussive syndrome through the research efforts and professional presentations of neuropsychology, speech and language pathology and physical therapy staff.
  • Neuropsychological Evaluation - This process is intended to provide an objective and quantitative assessment of a person's functioning following a neurologic illness or injury. The evaluation consists of the administration of a series of objective tests, designed to provide specific information about an individual's current cognitive and emotional functioning.
