Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program at the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute has been specifically designed to help individuals who have experienced a cardiac episode to regain their strength and return to their normal routines. Boasting one of the highest outpatient volumes in the metropolitan area, the program includes supervised exercise, telemetry monitoring, and dietary and behavioral counseling. But perhaps the most important thing offered by the program is peace of mind.

Candidates for the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program are those who have had a heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, pulmonary disease or those at high risk for any of the above. To enter the program, patients need a prescription from their physician, along with the results of a graded exercise stress test. Together with the patient, the staff determines appropriate goals and initiates exercising to help achieve those goals.

The electrical activity of the heart and other physiologic functions are monitored while exercising, so progress can be tracked in the safest, most efficient way possible, taking out much of the guesswork associated with physical exercise. The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program offers an educational series, as well as individual sessions, designed to help change whatever behaviors may impede the quest for the best health possible. While the staff believes their words and actions contribute to a patient's recovery, the understanding that each patient gains insight about what activities are beneficial and what are not is priceless. And this takes place in the vigilant presence of an experienced and caring staff of health care professionals.

The program also offers step-down programs at the conclusion of the monitored phase of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, so that patients can stay with the same staff and in the same environment as long as they like.
