Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute provides comprehensive services for patients with cardiac and/or respiratory difficulties. The focus of the program is to maximize stamina and function to allow a safe return
home.
During the first days of a patient's inpatient stay, a comprehensive evaluation will take place. Based upon the physician's recommendations, goals will be set and a treatment program will be designed to meet the needs of each individual patient. The treatment program may address
the following areas:
- Endurance training
- Walking
- Education on ways to conserve energy
- Transfer in/out of bed
- Pulse monitoring
- Leisure activities
- Nutrition
- Grooming/bathing/dressing
- Lifestyle adjustment
- Homemaking
- Medication education
Daily therapy schedules will include individual and group therapies. Patients will also take part in specialized group therapy facilitated by a cardiac nurse, who will tailor an exercise program for each patient based on his or her doctor's specifications and referral. Response to these exercises are regularly checked on a cardiac monitor.
Depending on progress, a patient's length of stay should average between 11 and 15 days. The rehabilitation team will meet weekly to discuss each patient's goals, progress and discharge plans. Family members are encouraged to take an active part in training and discharge planning. Additional services are available upon discharge for continued therapy.
