Osteoporosis
Once osteopenia or osteoporosis has been identified through a bone density test, referral to physical therapy for appropriate exercise should be part of a therapeutic plan. At the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) in central New Jersey, evaluation, education, treatment and a written home program include the following:
- Teaching proper movement to avoid stressing the spine
- Improving posture
- Increasing muscle strength, endurance and flexibility
- Modifying activities that put the spine at high risk for fracture
- Fall prevention strategies
- Pain management
- Recommendations for fitness and recreation activities
If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or are a caregiver to someone who has been, our program can help. Treatment can be arranged by obtaining a prescription from your physician for physical therapy.
