Lymphedema

Lymphedema is the swelling of a body part as the result of an accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the superficial tissues due to poor lymphatic function. It most often occurs in the extremities, but it may also occur in the face, the trunk, the abdomen or the genital area. Lymphedema may cause a loss of range of motion and functional use of the extremity.

At the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) in central New Jersey, our nationally-certified staff offers Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for the treatment of lymphedema. The goal of this therapy is to educate our patients, reduce the swelling and maintain the reduction. This treatment is the gold standard of treatment for lymphedema management.
