Orthopedics

The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute Orthopedic Program in central New Jersey is designed for patients who have had a hip fracture or total knee replacement of both knees at the same time. The focus of the program is to maximize function, assure a safe and accessible home environment, and plan for appropriate services after discharge.

Each patient receives a comprehensive evaluation during the first days of his or her inpatient stay in our NJ facility. Based upon the individual's needs and the team's recommendations, goals and a treatment program will developed. This program may address any of the following areas:

  • Medication education
  • Skin care
  • Bowel and bladder management
  • Transfer in/out of bed
  • Tub/shower/toilet transfers
  • Bathing and dressing
  • Stretching and strengthening
  • Balance activities
  • Walking

Daily therapy schedules are tailored to meet individual needs. Therapy is scheduled for three hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Depending upon the patient's progress, an inpatient stay typically lasts 7 days. The rehabilitation team meets weekly to discuss each patient's goals, progress and discharge plans. Family members are expected to take an active part in training and discharge planning. At the time of discharge, arrangements will be made for continued treatment as an outpatient or for home care.
