Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in central New Jersey provides comprehensive services for patients with cardiac and/or respiratory difficulties. The focus of the program is to maximize stamina and function to allow a safe return home.
Each patient receives a comprehensive evaluation during the first days of his or her inpatient stay in our NJ facility. Based upon the individual's needs and the team's recommendations, goals and a treatment program will developed. This program may address any of the following areas:
- Endurance training
- Education on ways to conserve energy
- Walking
- Grooming/bathing/dressing
- Homemaking
- Transfer in/out of bed
- Pulse monitoring
- Leisure activities
- Nutrition
- Adjustment to changes in health status
- Medication education
Daily therapy schedules are tailored to meet individual needs. Therapy is scheduled for three hours a day, Monday through Friday. Patients also take part in specialized group therapy facilitated by a cardiac nurse, who tailors an exercise program for each patient based on his or her doctor's specifications and referral. Response to these exercises is regularly checked on a cardiac monitor.
Depending upon the patient's progress, an inpatient stay typically lasts between 10 and 14 days. The rehabilitation team meets weekly to discuss each patient's goals, progress and discharge plans. Family members are expected to take an active part in training and discharge planning. Additional services for continued therapy, including home care, outpatient therapy, and outpatient cardiac rehab, are available upon discharge.
