The Center for Head Injuries
The Extended Recovery Unit

The Extended Recovery Unit
(ERU) is a component of the comprehensive JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute's Center for Head Injuries. The ERU is a medically directed subacute program designed to provide extended inpatient treatment to those who have ongoing issues related to their brain injury. The ERU is a JCAHO/CARF accredited program.

The Extended
Recovery Unit provides each patient with the services in a cost effective and socially responsible manner. Our subacute program provides two to three hours of rehabilitation therapy per day, five days a week.

All rehabilitation therapists are certified or licensed in their respective areas of expertise.

The following services are provided under the direction of the medical director for the Center for Head Injuries:
  • Cognitive Therapy
  • Coma Intervention Program
  • Neuropsychological Services
  • Patient and family training, education and counseling services
  • Physiatry
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • Rehabilitation Nursing
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Social Work Services
  • Therapeutic Recreation
  • Medical, Dental and Diagnostic services not available at this facility, but are provided through Solaris Health System affiliated facilities

Our ERU Management Program is a long-term program that provides specialized nursing care and individual rehabilitation therapy services to patients when a subacute program is no longer indicated. This program offers timely re-evaluations by the rehabilitation team to monitor and modify programs when necessary.

The unit is located in the affiliated JFK Hartwyck at Oak Tree Nursing, Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Edison. Funding for the subacute program is included in most health care/managed care plans, motor vehicle insurance and workers compensation plans. The program is designated as a specialty Traumatic Brain Injury Unit by the State of New Jersey Medicaid Program. Funding for the management program is usually by private pay or workers compensation.
